Renowned cinematographer Ed Lachman is set to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Camerimage Film Festival for his unparalleled contributions to the world of cinema.
Renowned American cinematographer Ed Lachman is set to be honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Camerimage Film Festival. Born on March 31, 1946, Lachman’s passion for cinema runs deep, stemming from a family legacy deeply rooted in the industry. His grandfather’s ownership of vaudeville theaters in the 1920s paved the way for Lachman’s own journey, which began alongside his father, a film theater distributor in New Jersey.
Lachman’s illustrious career boasts a diverse portfolio of collaborations with esteemed directors, including Todd Haynes, Ulrich Seidl, Steven Soderbergh, Gregory Nava, and Paul Schrader. Notable works include his cinematography in Todd Haynes’ poignant films like “Far from Heaven,” “I’m Not There,” “Carol,” “Wonderstruck,” and “Dark Waters,” as well as his contributions to Sofia Coppola’s debut feature, “The Virgin Suicides,” and Robert Altman’s final film, “A Prairie Home Companion.”
With three Oscar nominations under his belt for “Far from Heaven,” “Carol,” and Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” Ed Lachman has solidified his place among the industry’s elite. His remarkable talent has also been recognized internationally, notably with the Marburg Camera Award in Germany, making him the only American cinematographer to achieve this honor.

Camerimage holds a special place in Lachman’s heart, with his films often competing and garnering acclaim at the festival. Notably, he holds the record for the most main awards received by a cinematographer in Camerimage’s history, with four prestigious honors to his name. These include the Bronze Frog for “I’m Not There,” two Silver Frogs for “Far from Heaven” and “El Conde,” and the coveted Golden Frog for his outstanding work on “Carol.”
In recognition of his exceptional partnership with Todd Haynes, Lachman was bestowed with the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Cinematographer-Director Duo Award in 2011. This year, as Camerimage celebrates cinematic excellence from November 16 to 23, Lachman’s Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a testament to his unparalleled contributions to the art of cinematography and his enduring impact on the film industry.
